The pygmy goat was developed from the dwarf goat of Africa from where it was brought to Europe primarily by the British during colonial rule. They were then introduced to the United States from European zoos in the 1950s. They are tough animals and adapt to a variety of climates. They give birth to one to four offspring every nine to twelve months after a five-month gestation period, and produce large amounts of milk for their size. The height at the shoulder is from 40 to 50 cm.
